Truffle, also called a “rosy” or “wild” mushroom is a delicacy that comes from the roots of Pterocarpum scalare, a member of the family of Ascomycetes. A truffle is essentially the fruiting bodies of a tiny subterranean ascomycanete fungi, primarily one of the species of the genus Tuber. In addition to Tuber, several other genera of molds are also classed as truffle, including Geopora, Peziza, Choiromyces, and more than a hundred other molds. In order to enjoy this delicious fungal treat, it’s important to know exactly what to look for.

Truffle salt has a distinctive smell which is usually described as “fishy”. It’s not that the odor is unpleasant, but rather that it reminds one of dead fish. To most people, this is an unfavorable attribute, but those who are more sensitive can appreciate the unique taste of this fungus. Many consider it to be a high end artisan type flavor rather than a high quality food or cooking ingredient.

It has been used in culinary dishes for centuries, so much so that most common table salt is considered too “common” a flavor. Because of this, it’s often passed over in favor of more exotic flavors. This isn’t always a bad thing though. With the wide array of uses for truffle salt, its usage has increased in recent years, especially with the discovery of its strong aroma and flavor. While its use in most dishes is a positive note, its use as a food seasoning in some dishes has given it a somewhat shady reputation.

There are many health benefits to using this salt in your cooking. It has a unique and somewhat pungent flavor that some find unpleasant. While it does have some intensity to it, this particular characteristic offers many health benefits. For example, black truffle salt has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation, while also offering a number of other positive health benefits. Though it is most commonly associated with a high end cuisine, its health benefits have no limits.

One of the most common ways to enjoy the unique taste and aroma of truffle salt is in its use in scrambled eggs. Like many of its recipes, its flavor is achieved by soaking raw eggs in the salty solution overnight. Then, after they are cooked, the solution is removed from the eggs and then added to another dish containing butter and tomatoes. Scrambled eggs are a popular breakfast treat for many, but it has other benefits as well. For instance, when eaten as an appetizer it is said to stimulate the appetite, as well as being a good healthy source of protein.

In addition to its ability to add a wonderful flavor to scrambled eggs, black truffle salt is also known for its ability to keep food from absorbing too much of its flavor. In other words, it prevents the eggs from becoming dry. When eggs are over-salted, they lose their moisture and begin to take on a bitter, stale flavor. By using a salty spray, you can prevent this from happening.

Because black truffle salt is salty in its own right, it is often used to season all manner of dishes. This versatile salt is even used as a popular flavoring for microwave popcorn, which makes it a healthy snack as well as a great addition to any kind of meal. You’ll find it used in many European cooking styles as well, and is even occasionally found in American cooking too.

Whether you enjoy salty, spicy foods or a delicate flavor, you will find that you can use truffle salt to enhance the flavors in a variety of dishes. For example, you may already be aware that cream gravy is enhanced when it’s topped with a bit of truffle salt. You may not have realized how the rich flavor in meats can be enhanced by the addition of truffle salt as well. The next time you make a steak, instead of adding it to your barbecue sauce, try incorporating a small amount of truffle salt to your steak before you bake it.
